According to a report from Nikkei Asia, Google reached a significant milestone in 2023 by shipping approximately 10 million Pixel phones, with plans to replicate this achievement in the current year.
Citing insider sources, the publication revealed that Google surpassed a crucial benchmark in Pixel phone shipments last year and has set an ambitious target of shipping another 10 million units in 2024.
While the specifics of the breakdown between different Pixel models were not provided, it is presumed that the Pixel 7 and 7 Pro contributed significantly to the 2023 shipments. Earlier reports from Nikkei Asia indicated that Google had ordered 8 million devices overall, with over 7 million allocated for the Pixel 6 series.
In addition to the existing lineup, Google is set to introduce the Pixel 6a in the first half of the year and the Pixel 7a in the latter half. Moreover, the company launched the highly anticipated Pixel Fold, and the latter part of 2023 would have incorporated shipments of the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro for at least 2.5 months.
The report also outlined Google’s strategy to manufacture the Pixel 8 series in India, a move announced in October to diversify production beyond China and Vietnam, thereby enhancing supply chain resilience.
Initial shipments of the Pixel 8 Pro devices are expected in the second quarter (April-June), followed by the Pixel 8 around the middle of the year. Google plans to commence with a “small volume” initially, reflecting the anticipated mid-life phase of the Pixel 8 series by that time.
Furthermore, Google has been addressing certain issues with its Pixel 8 lineup, such as a bug preventing the camera from adjusting exposure when tapping to focus. The company has also introduced promotional offers, including trade-in deals, to incentivize purchases of the Pixel 8 Pro and Fold models.
In addition, Google showcased its Pixel 8 Super Bowl camera ad, highlighting the device’s Guided Frame feature, further promoting the capabilities of its latest smartphone offerings.
